What is a power of attorney?
A power of attorney (Civil Code, Arts. 353–368) is a written document by which one person (the principal) authorises another person (the attorney) to perform legally significant acts on their behalf. The maximum term is 3 years; if no term is stated, the power of attorney is valid for 1 year. A notarially certified power of attorney is required for property sales, banking operations, court representation, and dealings with state authorities.
